The current community cure is fire
The dedicated cure video shows an infected player leaving the Outpost shelter, taking controlled surface fire damage, and returning inside after the Rot meter falls to zero. Steam players repeat the same principle using the Fire Ant or flamethrower-style small Vessel. The developer has not published an official cure procedure, so treat this as current gameplay evidence.
Read the Rot meter and symptoms
The cure video points to the Rot value at the lower left and uses the Geiger-like audio, coughing, and sneezing as warning signs. Longer beginner footage reports stronger effects at higher meter values, including shaking and involuntary actions. Exact thresholds are version-sensitive and should be confirmed against the current UI.
Fast cure at the Outpost
Move outside only far enough for the surface burn to start, watch the Rot value, and return to cover when it reaches zero or your health margin becomes unsafe. Do not remain exposed after the infection clears. Begin with enough health to absorb the treatment and keep a Bed or healing item ready inside.
Alternative fire sources
Community reports and current videos also use Bernie or the Fire Ant's flame and a Lantern to burn Rot away. Those tools can remove contaminated growth as well as player infection in the recorded material. Control the flame carefully because the cure does not prevent ordinary fire damage.
Recover after treatment
Removing Rot and restoring lost health are separate steps. A Bed provides repeatable recovery over time, while a carried healing item is faster; changing or respawning a Vessel may also alter the situation but can leave items behind. Confirm the meter is clear before beginning the next descent.
Do not overstate contagion rules
Videos report coughing, sneezing, and nearby infection effects, but official sources do not define multiplayer spread radius, fixed thresholds, or persistence between sessions. Avoid standing beside allies or Outpost NPCs while visibly infected, then verify the cure before regrouping. Label any exact transmission rule as pending until a current controlled test exists.
